Running Quantal

When Quantal Quetzal first alpha came to life, I grabbed it and threw it on my Asus EEE PC 900 and flipped out with the stability, this happend so with precise. So far, I could say that Quantal is the best alpha release ever! Until I got this today.

The thing goes like this, I login and my desktop looks like the first screenshot, if I click on the desktop I can see my wallpaper for a few seconds. The same happends when the launcher hides or when I activate the HUD, I can't even imagine what is causing this "un-documented feature", but I guess this isn't an unexpected behavior when you run a development release.

Update: I downloaded the latest Live CD image and tried it from a Live USB and the problem persist. It's as if I'm running Unity without 3D acceleration activated, even though /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p says my video card supports Unity 3D.

I guess it's time to file a bug report!

Motu Journey: Adopting a Package in Debian

I've kept this post on hold very long time, but I have to keep the Motu Journey rolling. It happends to be that I found the need for a clipboard manager so I decided for Glipper. At that momment glipper was maintained in Ubuntu by upstream, so I offered my help after checking that the package in Debian was orphaned (a big opportunity to "Contribute to Ubuntu from Debian").

juanito

The package in Debian needed lot of love and after RTFM on how to adopt a package (in spanish) I filled a ITA and got it uploaded in the Debian archive, thanks to the sponsoring of Aron Xu. From this adventure I learned how to make manpages, how to use svn-buildpackage and the most important: I learned that uploading packages to Debian guarantees better quality packages landing in Ubuntu.

MOTU Journey in a Dead End

As I mentioned before, I started my MOTU adventure very late in Natty cicle, but it was useful to get confident with the tools, and fixed some minor bugs and upgrade one package :-)

Desert Dead End

With the Oneric cicle now running, I'm in some kind of dead end and I can't find where to go, Should I try merges/syncs???

Natty está aquí!!! NOT

Back to the 80's?

With the release of Natty beta it was time to follow my ritual and make a fresh install of ubuntu beta on my netbook. I was tempted by the Upgrade option than now comes in the Live CD, but I really wanted a fresh install. After some upgrades my desktop looked like this.

A couple of updates later, the desktop turned back to normal (ambiance theme, black panel, etc).

And after today's update, the horror again! I thinks this is how Unity would look like if we were back to the 80's.

Can someone explain me why Unity is behaving this way?

Starting my MOTU Journey

Muskoka Wharf - Gravenhurst

After delaying it for two release cycles I'm starting my MOTU Journey. I believe that it's a little late in the release cycle to take this step, but it's better late than never!

As first step I've read the Packaging Guide, set up a pbuilder environment for Natty and subscribed to the MOTU-mentors mailing list. Right now I'm looking for a task, so wish me luck and I'll see you on #ubuntu-motu.

Maverick Release Party - Ubuntu Nicaragua

What an awesome release party! It's been one of the best events I've been since I joinned this great community. We took this change to re-launch the LoCo's website (powered by Felix, Byron and Fitoria) and recognized the efforts of the not-so-new members of our team.

Thanks to Neville Cross and Masión Teodolinda for sposoring the event and CISAS for the breath-taking t-shirts, it wouldn't had been the same without your support.

You can see more pictures in Felix's Gallery, the Event's Gallery and mine.

Planning the Ubuntu Open Week in Spanish

As we did with Karmic, the latinamerican Ubuntu Community is organizing the Ubuntu Open Week in Spanish for Lucid! I took sometime to prepare the wiki and the "zen master" Leandro Gómez did a great job with the artwork (as usual).

If you speak spanish and want to lead one of the sessions of the "Semana Ubuntera" (that's how we call the UOW in spanish) check the wiki and let me know.

Lucid Sweetness

I decided to beta-test Ubuntu Lucid when the beta 1 came out, so last monday I installed it in my netbook, after working out some troubles with my USB flash drive. The new look is awesome and after a few hours I got used to the new position of the max, min , close buttons.

Today, after downloading some megabytes of updates a found very nice changes in the Indicator Applet, like the little blue arrow shown next to the Chat icon when you are using empathy. I all the icons are now in one colour (no more blue bars in the Network Manager applet when using my broadband USB modem).

On the other hand, Gwibber is now working as I spected! No more gwibber-service crashes. Great job guys, let's see want other surprises do we get with the future updates.
